What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune condition, characterised by repeated inflammation of the brain and spinal cord nervous tissue. It causes loss of the insulating myelin sheath.

It isn’t yet fully understood what causes MS, but the autoimmune process appears to be caused both by genetic and environmental factors – for example viral infections in early life.

Symptoms of MS can include:

  • Impaired vision
  • Restricted mobility
  • Pain
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Cognitive dysfunction
  • Fatigue
  • Numbness and tingling

Symptoms can lessen and worsen in periods – known as remissions and relapses. There is no known cure for MS, but there are treatments that can fight relapses.
